A SIP, explained without the jargon
What a systematic investment plan is, what it is not, and how to think about the amount on a first salary.
A systematic investment plan is a standing instruction. On a date you choose, a fixed amount moves from your bank into a mutual fund. That is the whole mechanism. The posters add a lot of other meanings. Most of them are optional.
What you are buying
You are buying units of a fund. The fund holds a portfolio, often of shares if it is an equity fund. The price per unit changes every business day. Some months you get more units for the same rupees. Some months you get fewer. That averaging is the part people call “rupee cost averaging”. It is a description of what happens. It is not a promise that you will make money.
A 12 percent return in a calculator is an assumption you typed. It is not the return a fund owes you. Equity funds can be down for years. The SIP calculator is for seeing the shape of a monthly amount, including a step-up if your salary rises. It is pre-tax.
What to decide before you open anything
You need a bank account, and then a way to buy the fund: a mutual fund platform, or a demat and trading account if you want stocks and funds in one place. The account is not the investment. Opening it and then buying a stock someone mentioned in a chat is a different, worse plan. The demat guide is about the account. This article is about the monthly amount.
Pick the amount after the emergency transfer, not before. A SIP you cancel in the third month taught you less than a smaller one you kept. If your income is irregular, a fixed date will break. Skim a percentage on the day money arrives instead, and keep a cash floor. The quiz result called Flexible Earner is this case.
Tax, in one paragraph
As of October 2026, gains on equity-oriented mutual funds held for more than 12 months are taxed at 12.5 percent on the amount above ₹1.25 lakh in a year. Gains on units held for 12 months or less are taxed at 20 percent. The ₹1.25 lakh is across your equity funds and listed shares, not per fund. Debt funds are taxed differently. This is not a filing guide. Check the official rules for the year you sell, and read the tax article for how this sits next to salary.
What to ignore at the start
Fund-of-the-month lists. Options. A policy that says it is insurance and an investment. A return “since inception” that covers a lucky decade. You can learn those later. They are not the first SIP.
A SIP is also not a retirement date. Financial independence on a first salary is the longer version of the same monthly amount.
Educational, not financial, tax, or insurance advice. Figures were checked in October 2026. Confirm anything that changes a tax return or a policy before you act.
