A systematic investment plan is a fixed amount invested every month. This projects that amount. It does not choose a fund, and it does not subtract tax.

How the number is calculated

Each monthly deposit is treated as going in at the start of the month, then growing at one-twelfth of the annual rate you typed. That is the formula most Indian SIP calculators use. A step-up raises the monthly amount once a year. At 0, the amount stays flat.

If you set the return to 0, the result is only the money you put in. That is useful as a check.

How to use it

Start with an amount you could keep in a month when rent, a trip home, and a repair all land together. A return of 10 to 12 percent is a common long-term assumption for an equity fund. It is an assumption. A fund can do worse for years.

What this leaves out

Tax. In India, gains on equity-oriented funds are taxed when you sell them. As of October 2026, long-term gains above ₹1.25 lakh in a year are taxed at 12.5 percent, and short-term gains at 20 percent. Confirm the rule for the year you sell. The tax article has the plain version.

It also leaves out exit loads, expense ratios, and the chance you stop the SIP. Those change the result more than the third decimal of a return.
