The first 30 days of your salary
What to do after the first salary in India lands. Start with take-home and the payslip, not with a new investing app.
The money feels larger on day one than it does on day twenty. That is normal. The useful move is not a new investing app. It is seeing what this salary already has to cover before you promise it to anyone, including yourself.
Look at take-home, not CTC
Your offer letter and your bank credit are different numbers. CTC can include the employer’s provident fund contribution, insurance, and a bonus you have not been paid. The number that matters this month is the amount that reached your account.
Open the payslip and find four lines:
- Basic pay, or whatever your company calls the wage PF is calculated on
- The PF deducted from your side
- Tax deducted
- Net pay
From 17 September 2026 the wage ceiling for mandatory EPF is ₹25,000 a month, up from ₹15,000. The employee share is still 12 percent of PF wages. If your basic is above the ceiling, your company may deduct on the full basic or only up to the ceiling. The payslip is the authority. A blog is not.
That PF line is still your money. It is just not money you can spend on Friday.
Write the costs that do not ask your permission
Before you decide what you will “save”, list what already leaves:
- Rent and maintenance
- Food you would buy even in a dull week
- Local travel
- Phone
- Any EMI, including one a parent took with you as co-borrower
- Money you send home
An example, not a target: take-home ₹48,000, rent ₹18,000, food and travel ₹10,000, phone ₹700, money home ₹5,000. Fixed costs are ₹33,700 before a single plan with friends. The ₹14,300 left is the real decision. CTC of ₹8 lakh never appears in it.
Give the buffer its own account
Leave the spending money in the salary account. Move the buffer to a second savings account, ideally at a bank you do not have a debit card habit with. The job of that account is to be boring.
In the first month, one transfer is enough. Pick a number you will not reverse when a weekend gets expensive. If that number is ₹3,000, send ₹3,000. A perfect budget that you abandon on the 12th is worse than a small one that runs.
The budget calculator will show the 50/30/20 split. If rent already uses half of take-home, change the percentages. Do not treat the default as a grade.
What can wait until day 30
A SIP can wait until the transfer has happened once. A credit card can wait until you know you will pay the statement in full. A stock tip from a group chat can wait indefinitely.
Term insurance can wait if nobody depends on your income. If someone does, it moves up the list, and it is still a pure term plan, not a policy that pretends to be an investment. Health cover is a separate product. Employer health cover usually ends when the job ends.
The checklist is the same order, as a list you can tick. Done for the month means the transfer happened. It does not mean you understood every fund category.
Educational, not financial, tax, or insurance advice. Figures were checked in October 2026. Confirm anything that changes a tax return or a policy before you act.
