Where to keep money you will need soon

Cash for a Tuesday, the tax on debt-fund units bought after 1 April 2023, and the ₹5 lakh deposit insurance cap. Not a rate table.

Money with a date on it is not a systematic investment plan. A course fee, a deposit on a flat, a trip you have already told people about. If the date is inside a few years, the job of the money is to still be there.

The Tuesday fund

The emergency fund is this idea for a bill you did not plan. Keep that in an account you can use on a Tuesday. A scheme such as the Public Provident Fund locks money for many years and resets its rate every quarter. It is not the Tuesday fund.

This page does not print small-savings rates. They are reset every quarter, and several of those schemes are for a parent or a child, not for the next two years of a first salary.

Debt funds, and the tax line that expired

A debt fund lends to governments and companies. The unit price moves less than a share fund, and it still moves. It can be a place for money you will not need for a few years, after you have read the scheme. It is not a savings account with a better poster.

For units of a debt-heavy fund bought on or after 1 April 2023, the gain is taxed at your income-tax slab whenever you sell, with no indexation. A longer holding period does not turn it into a kinder rate. Units bought before that date are taxed on a different rule, and a transfer before 23 July 2024 can differ again. A note that still says “after three years, with indexation” is describing a rule that does not apply to new units. Check the official rule for the units you hold.

Share funds follow a different rule, in the SIP article. Do not park a one-year goal in a share fund so a calculator looks larger. The savings goal calculator will accept a high return. For a short goal, type a small one.

What a bank deposit is insured for

Deposit insurance is run by the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC), a subsidiary of the Reserve Bank of India. As of October 2026 the cap is ₹5 lakh per depositor, per bank. Principal and interest count together. Balances in the same right and capacity are added up, including across branches of that bank, and across a savings account, a fixed deposit, a recurring deposit, and a current account. A different bank is a separate cap. A proposal to raise the figure had been reported. It had not been announced.

The cap is not a reason to split money across banks chosen for the rate. The Reserve Bank’s DICGC answers are the page to confirm before you rely on the number.

Gold, in one sentence

New sovereign gold bond issues have stopped since February 2024. A gold fund follows the gold price and pays no interest. Jewellery adds making charges you do not get back when you sell the metal.

A goal with a date

Write the amount and the year. If some of it is already saved, the monthly number is only the gap. The savings goal calculator does that arithmetic. It does not choose where the money sits, and it does not subtract tax. A three-year goal and a twenty-year goal should not use the same typed return.

Educational, not financial, tax, or insurance advice. Figures were checked in October 2026. Confirm anything that changes a tax return or a policy before you act.

The page stays public. The email is a copy you can find later, plus an occasional note when we publish something useful.

The same steps, as a list you can tick.
